Photo storage was widely offered free, then narrowed almost universally into paid tiers. The shift reflects a cost structure that a one-time payment cannot cover.

Stored data has a recurring cost

A photograph uploaded once occupies disk, is replicated for durability, and consumes power and cooling continuously for as long as it is retained.

Unlike a download, that cost does not end. It accumulates for years, and the library only grows because people rarely delete.

Free storage therefore creates a liability that increases with time, funded by revenue that arrived once or not at all.

Durability multiplies the footprint

Providers keep multiple copies across separate failure domains so that a drive, rack or facility failure does not lose data.

Erasure coding reduces the overhead relative to plain replication, but the stored bytes still exceed the original file by a meaningful factor.

The promise being sold is not space but the near-certainty of retrieval, and that certainty is what the redundancy pays for.

Phone cameras grew faster than storage prices fell

Sensor resolution, burst capture and high-quality video have all increased the bytes generated per user per year, in some cases sharply.

Storage cost per unit has declined steadily, but not at a pace that offsets simultaneous growth in resolution and in the number of connected devices.

Compressed storage tiers were introduced as a middle path, trading some quality for a footprint the provider could serve at a lower price.

Bundling hides the price rather than removing it

Storage is now commonly packaged with device subscriptions, productivity suites or carrier plans, which spreads it across services with better margins.

That improves the perceived value while leaving the underlying arrangement unchanged: access continues while payment continues.

The dependency becomes visible only when a subscription lapses, at which point uploads stop and deletion policies begin counting down.

Portability is the part worth checking

Providers offer export tools, but a full library export produces an archive far larger than most home connections and drives handle comfortably.

Album structure, edits and metadata often survive the export imperfectly, so what comes out is a set of files rather than the organized library that went in.

A local copy on a drive you own remains the only arrangement with no recurring payment attached, which is why it complements rather than competes with cloud storage.
