Pairing frequently requires a factory reset, and some devices are locked to their original ecosystem in ways that prevent adoption elsewhere.
Cameras and locks are the hardest cases, since their functions involve credentials and media handling that the manufacturer's service performed.
Standards were meant to reduce this
Cross-industry interoperability standards define local control and a common commissioning process, so a device can be adopted by any compatible controller.
Where a product genuinely implements them, hub failure becomes a replacement rather than a loss, since the accessories remain usable.
Implementations vary in completeness, and vendor-specific features usually sit outside the standard, so parity is not guaranteed by a logo alone.
What to check before buying
The useful questions are whether automations run with the internet disconnected, whether the accessories use an open radio standard, and whether a documented local interface exists.
A published support commitment helps, but a device that keeps working without the manufacturer is protected by architecture rather than by a promise.
Open-source home automation platforms exist largely to serve this scenario, adopting orphaned hardware that would otherwise be discarded when a service closes.
