I bought a mid-range phone three years ago, partly out of curiosity about how much the extra money for a flagship actually buys.
The compromises were real and they were not the ones reviews had led me to expect.
Where I expected problems and did not have them
Everyday performance. Opening applications, messaging, browsing, maps, video. Indistinguishable from a flagship in normal use, throughout the three years.
This is the largest gap between review coverage and experience. Benchmark differences are enormous and the everyday difference is close to zero, because ordinary tasks have not been demanding for years.
Screen quality. Perfectly good. Slightly less bright in direct sun and otherwise unremarkable.
Build. It has survived three years without complaint.
Where the compromises actually showed
Camera in difficult light, substantially. In good light the photographs are fine. In low light, indoors, or high contrast, the gap is obvious — more noise, less detail, worse colour, and a slower shutter that produces blur.
This is the sensor size and processing difference and it is the single most visible gap.
Software update duration, which is the compromise that actually determined the lifespan. The device received a shorter support period than a flagship would have, and that is now the reason I will replace it rather than any hardware limitation.
Battery, which was adequate and never good, and which degraded on the same curve as any other.
And sustained performance under load. Gaming and long video calls caused throttling that a better-cooled device would have handled.
The update point deserves emphasis
Because it is the compromise with the largest practical consequence and the least coverage.
A phone that receives updates for three years and a phone that receives them for six have very different total costs of ownership, regardless of the purchase price difference.
The support period is now published by most manufacturers and has become a genuine competitive dimension, with some mid-range devices now offering longer support than older flagships did.
It is the specification I would check first, and it appears in almost no comparison table.
What I would buy now
The same category, with more attention to two things.
The stated software support period, treated as the primary specification.
The main camera sensor size, which is the one hardware difference that produces visibly different output and which cannot be compensated for in software.
Everything else — processor generation, screen refresh rate, additional cameras, storage speed — made no difference I could perceive over three years of ordinary use.
The honest caveat
This conclusion depends entirely on what you do with a phone.
If you photograph in low light frequently, the camera gap is significant and worth paying for.
If you play demanding games, the sustained performance gap is real.
If you keep a phone for five or six years, the longer support and better thermal design of a flagship may make it cheaper over the period.
For messaging, browsing, maps, photographs in daylight and video, which is what most people do most of the time, the extra money buys very little that is perceptible.
The used flagship alternative
The option I would seriously consider next time.
A flagship from two or three years ago, bought used, frequently costs less than a new mid-range device and offers a better camera, better sustained performance and better build.
The trade is a partly consumed battery, a shorter remaining support window, and no warranty.
The battery is replaceable for a modest sum, which addresses the main concern. The support window is the real constraint and needs checking against the specific model.
Refurbished units from sellers offering a warranty sit between the two on price and remove most of the risk, and that is probably what I will actually do.
The resale side
A point that affects the total cost comparison.
Mid-range devices depreciate faster in percentage terms and are worth very little after three years, whereas flagships retain a meaningful proportion.
Which narrows the gap between the two on total cost of ownership more than the purchase prices suggest.
It does not close it, in the calculations I have done, and it is worth including rather than comparing purchase prices alone.
The effect is strongest for people who upgrade frequently and negligible for anybody who keeps a device until it stops receiving updates.
What the reviews got wrong
Worth stating directly since it is the general lesson.
Reviews are written after days of use, which is the period in which processor speed, benchmark scores and camera comparisons dominate the impression.
The things that determined my three years — support duration, battery replaceability, low-light photography, thermal behaviour under sustained load — are all things that only reveal themselves over months.
Which means the review format is structurally biased toward the specifications that matter least, not through any fault of the reviewers but because of when they write.
Long-term follow-up pieces are considerably more useful and considerably rarer, for the obvious commercial reason that nobody is launching anything when they appear.
