Portable machines running full desktop operating systems have gone from a curiosity to an established category. Having used one for a year, the appeal is real and the constraint is fundamental.
The constraint is power
Everything about these devices follows from one number: how much power the system can draw and dissipate.
A desktop can consume several hundred watts and remove the heat with large fans. A handheld has a battery to preserve, a small volume, and a surface a person is holding.
The practical envelope is a small fraction of a desktop's, and performance scales with it.
Which means no amount of engineering produces desktop performance in a handheld. What engineering has done is make the performance available within that envelope considerably better than it was, which is a real achievement and a different one.
What this means in use
The practical experience follows directly.
Older and less demanding titles run well and look good.
Recent demanding titles run at reduced settings and resolution, frequently with upscaling doing substantial work, and at frame rates that are playable rather than smooth.
And there is a continuous trade between performance and battery life that the user manages, either through a power setting or through per-title configuration.
Battery life under load is short — frequently in the region of an hour and a half for demanding content — which is the specification most likely to disappoint somebody expecting a portable console experience.
Where the category genuinely wins
Being fair, because the above sounds negative.
An existing library. The main appeal is playing games you already own rather than buying into a separate ecosystem, and for anybody with a substantial back catalogue that is a large proposition.
Older titles, which are enormous in number, run beautifully and are exactly what a portable device suits.
Flexibility. It is a computer. It runs whatever you install, connects to a monitor and keyboard, and does everything else a computer does.
And the form factor genuinely changes when and where playing happens, which for people whose gaming was previously confined to a desk is the actual benefit.
The software situation
The area that has improved most and remains uneven.
Compatibility layers allowing titles built for one operating system to run on another have become remarkably good, and the majority of a typical library works without intervention.
What breaks is generally anti-cheat systems, which operate at a level where compatibility layers struggle and which require explicit support from the publisher. Several major titles remain unplayable for this reason.
Community-maintained compatibility databases are the practical way to check before buying, and they are more reliable than any official statement.
The ergonomic reality
Rarely covered and it determines whether you keep using it.
These devices are heavy. Held for an hour, weight matters more than any specification, and the difference between models is substantial.
Grip shape and control placement vary considerably, and this is entirely personal. Trying one before buying is worth more than any review.
Fan noise under load is noticeable on all of them and varies.
And screen quality varies enormously, with some models still using panels that undermine the whole proposition.
Who it suits
Somebody with an existing library, who plays a mix of older and current titles, who values portability and flexibility, and who is comfortable adjusting settings.
Somebody who wants to play recent demanding titles at high quality is buying the wrong device, and no model in the category changes that.
And somebody who wants a console experience — put it in, it works, no configuration — will find the fiddling irritating, because there is a genuine amount of it.
The thing I would check first
Take the ten titles you actually play, check them against a compatibility database, and see how many work and at what settings.
That single exercise answers the question better than any review, and it takes fifteen minutes.
Everything else about these devices is a matter of degree. Whether your specific library runs is binary.
Storage and the practical constraint
The specification that bites soonest.
Modern titles are very large, and the internal storage on most of these devices holds a small number of them.
Memory card expansion is standard and considerably slower than internal storage, which affects loading times noticeably on some titles.
The practical approach most owners settle on is a small rotating selection installed internally and the rest on a card or re-downloaded as needed, which requires a connection and some planning.
Buying the larger internal storage option is the upgrade most owners say they would repeat.
Docked use
The capability that changes the value proposition and is frequently overlooked.
Connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse, these devices are a functioning desktop computer, and for lighter workloads a perfectly adequate one.
Which means for somebody who would otherwise buy both a laptop and a handheld, one device with a dock can plausibly replace both.
The limits are real — sustained performance under a desktop workload is modest, and the ergonomics of the built-in controls do not matter when docked — and the arithmetic works for a certain kind of user.
